Every Russian Region in 17 Minutes
Anything interesting there?
Let's start with the Tunguska event, when an extraterrestrial object made a very powerful explosion over Siberia in 1908. That was here in Krasnoyarsk Krai, here in the video.
And speaking of Krasnoyarsk Krai (not to be confused with Krasnodar Krai), there's the Otyken musical group. Reminds me of muppets. The Chulym people are in
southern Siberia. The language is almost completely extinct.
Shaman word origin.
Sakha is here in the video. Free Sakha Republic from Anna from Ukraine. I haven't watched it yet.
Pleistocene Park is where a Russian guy made "a major initiative to restore high productive grazing ecosystems in the Arctic, similar to the mammoth steppe ecosystem". Have you ever wondered how herds of big animals fed themselves during the Ice Age? If they ever manage to make mammoths again, that's where they could go, but note that this is not what the park is trying to do. The project is located here.
Yakutsk (map) is apparently the coldest city in the world.
Denisova cave is in Altai Krai. The cave is here, while Altai Krai is here in the video.
Denisova cave has evidence of many layers of use by modern humans, possibly Neanderthals, as well as Denisovans, one of those mysterious hominims.
Tuva is here in the video. It was apparently a sort of country during the interwar period (1921-1944). Learn something new every day.
Sergei Shoigu was born in Tuva, and had a Tuvan father. Simon Whistler on the Places channel has a
Russia's Most Dangerous Region video showing the grim side of the place. However, it's kind of interesting. You can see the
wikipedia entry, at least the Miscellaneous section at the bottom.
Kakassia, here in the video, is where we get our friend the game tobit.
Irkutsk is here in the video. Irkutsk and Yakutsk (Sakha) are stuck in my brain because of the old game Risk.
Lake Baikal straddles Irkutsk and Buryatia. Its a remarkable place in more than one way. How did the seals gete there? I'm sure China would like all that fresh water.
Buryatia is here in the video. Check it out.
Russia took Outer Manchuria from China in 1858-'60.
